Intercepting waste in the heart of Aarhus
Located close to the outlet of Aarhus Å, SeaProtectorOne captures floating waste carried through the city before it reaches the harbour and surrounding marine environment.
The installation demonstrates how automated collection technology can operate within an active urban waterway, continuously removing waste while adapting to changing water levels and local conditions.

THE PERSPECTIVE
Collection as part of a wider system
For Aarhus Municipality, the installation formed part of a wider approach to plastic pollution. Designed to operate with limited day-to-day intervention, the system collects waste directly from the water while remaining integrated into an active urban waterway used by kayaks and other small vessels.
The Aarhus case demonstrates how collection technology can become part of a broader local system rather than operating as a stand-alone clean-up activity – combining environmental action with practical, continuous operation.
Riverguard builds on this principle and takes it further. By connecting collection with sorting, processing, recycling and market demand, the initiative aims to develop complete value chains where recovered plastic becomes a resource and where the value created can help support long-term collection.
