Øresund Days 2025 – World Ocean Day

Jun 12, 2025 | Havets Spøgelser, Previous events

On Sunday, June 8, we kicked off Øresund Days 2025 with a splash, hosting events in Helsingør Harbour, Vedbæk Harbour and Amager Beach Park. Despite grey skies on the horizon, the day was filled with energy, curiosity, and a shared love for the sea.

Activities included ghost net diving, water lab wading, crab catching, boat trips with diving crews, VR ocean tech demos – and countless great conversations with engaged citizens, curious children, and bypassers who love the ocean. At 11am, many tuned in to our livestream from Øresund, where divers from North Nature and Vedbæk Sports Diving Club explored a wreck for ghost nets. One of our new reusable buoys – produced with funding from the Codan Foundation – was used to mark the site.

There was strong support for all three events before, during, and after the day, and the coverage reflected this. National broadcasters DR, TV2, and TV2 Kosmopol featured the events, and our own Head of Secretariat Thomas Alstrup also joined P4 Copenhagen for a live interview. Throughout the day, our media team from UKENDT MEDIA and Gittemaria Johansen were on the move between locations, capturing footage for the documentary and speaking with locals.

Highlights from the day

Helsingør: Øresund Aquarium’s crab-catching station and the maritime upcycling market – organized by Sjælland Rundt Sailing Week and Helsingør Sailing Club – where big hits. Many also stopped by to talk with divers from Aquanaut Sports Diving Club and professionals from Dykker Services.

Vedbæk: Ocean Flagship’s innovative tech showcase impressed visitors, while clean-up efforts took place both in the sea and in a smaller splashing pool, thanks to Vedbæk Sports Diving Club, Herlev Diving Club Jernlungerne, and Underwater Ambassador. There was a great spirit among the divers as they joined North Nature for the day’s live-streamed dive.

Amager: Water viewers and crab-catching activities with Nature Center Amager Strand drew eager children and adults alike to the shallows. Copenhagen Dive School presented their underwater finds and cleanup efforts, while Lynetten Diving Club shared their role in the Ghosts of the Sea project.

None of this would have been possible without our amazing team and partners: The Danish Sports Diving Federation, North Nature, and the many volunteers and diving clubs who stepped up to support. A special thank-you to the Codan Foundation, whose support made both the day’s activities and the production of 1000 buoys and 1000 collection nets for ghost nets removal and collection of ocean waste in Øresund possible.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by – we’re already looking forward to the next Øresund Day this autumn!
